Well, here are the answers to the quiz on the old Divers' expressions (slang) which I posted on 2nd February.

Ball and Chain = Diver's wife or girlfriend. Example: He wanted to dive last night, but the Ball and chain took him dancing.

Buzz (derived from Booze) = Alcholic drink. Example: "He couldn't dive as he got Buzzed up last night”.

Frag = Nemrod Fragata speargun. A favourite of many divers including this writer.

Fudd (derived from Food) = a meal. For example, "Have you fudded? " meant have you eaten? or "Heavy Fudd" = good meal.

Grattax/Grattux = A lady diver.

Hacker = someone who shoots fish indiscriminately.

Monkey suit = a wet suit.

Moxy = a collecting net invented/adapted by Rexie Mortier; originally Rexie’s moxy.

Mozzie Sprayer = a contemptuous term for a SCUBA UNIT popular with expert free divers. This was based on the resemblance of a SCUBA unit to a knapsack sprayer. For instance, "I don't need a Mozzie Sprayer to go down to 100 feet".

Mudplank = Fishing Mudalali later extended to any businessman.

One-fin Diver = a beginner or incompetent diver.

Paul = Money. Heavy Paul = lots of money such as "I shot a large snapper and got heavy paul for it".

Pooharn= The spear from a speargun.

Sam = Sand, as in are we over the reef? No, sam, sam everywhere.

DISCLAIMER: Admittedly some of these are quite rude. Nevertheless, as they form an interesting facet of our diving history I think they should be recorded. So please don't shoot the messenger!

As this is a polite FB group some of the funniest and most colourful expressions cannot be recorded here for obvious reasons.

There were many other very picturesque terms which I will add from time-to-time.
